Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leslie Genoway, owner of LG Fitness, located in Regina, SK, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
At LG Fitness, we offer progressive, fundamental training to individuals looking to enhance their overall well-being. We strive to bring each individual to their own personal level of success by offering a variety of services that support healthy lifestyles. Not only do we train people to look and feel their best, we train people for life and longevity.
Our philosophy is built on three pillars:
EDUCATION. We pride ourselves on doing things the right way every time. Our highly-educated team takes time to teach proper form. It is committed to helping you understand how each exercise relates to your overall goal. We want you to know the why and how of everything you do. After all, learning with our clients is our favourite way to expand our own knowledge!
PROGRESS. We know how good it feels to catch a glimpse of that new muscle bulging out when you least expect it. We also know the impact of realizing how small lifestyle changes have transformed your life. Our community is made up of inspiring individuals committed to living well in every aspect of their lives. We support each other, teach each other, and celebrate each other's successes.
FAMILY. We recognize the important role your family plays in helping you achieve your wellness goals. So why let one get in the way of the other? Our family-friendly facility offers flexible hours and welcomes little ones who need to tag along. You can stay on track with your wellness routine without giving up your superhero parent status.
Tell us about yourself
From a young age, I've always been some form of a coach. I've been involved with elite athletics and have coached multiple sports, levels, ages, and genders. When I was starting to phase out of my athletic career, I knew I wanted to stay in a world where fitness and health were a priority, so I decided I would take my degree in kinesiology specifically so I could open a training facility for the every day, down to earth, general population people. I wanted the facility to be a place that was comfortable, encouraging. I allowed you to have confidence in your exercise, no matter the level you were at.
Every day, I'm fortunate enough to see my clients (and friends) win by achieving goals, whether they are big or small. From celebrating that you were able to make it to the gym three times this week to hit a personal best in your strength, all are equally motivating for me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is the community I've been able to build over the years. They support, encourage, and guide each other throughout their journeys of fitness. There is nothing better for me than to see a group of clients hanging out together outside of the facility who previously hadn't known each other. A cherry on top is when they also include exercise into that.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
At the end of the day, everything comes down to you- finances, decisions (good and bad), gambles, HR, admin, and so on… you have to be a chameleon while switching your hats, day to day and sometimes minute to minute.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get a great accountant- they can save you when CRA or something comes a calling for an audit (it will happen, at some point).
- Review your business plan and exit strategy at least yearly. Are you still on track? What has pivoted? What's the best step?
- Do something that brings you joy and fills your bucket. On the hard days, that's what'll keep you going; on the great days, it reassures you why you are doing it.
