Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lexy Sanguinetti, co-founder of Sanguinetti & Company, located in Wellington, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are US-based travel and business consultants specializing in offering a variety of experiences in East Africa. Our customers are business, leisure, and philanthropic travelers from the USA and Caribbean who need full destination management services.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in East Africa, but I have lived the majority of my life in the USA. My unique ability to relate to, understand, communicate and work with people from both ends of the world allows me to be a reliable connector between the Americas and Africa. Each day I am motivated by the reactions I get from people visiting East Africa for the first time or those returning who just can't get enough of what Mama Africa has to offer!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been enduring the journey of entrepreneurship for ten years and surviving the recent pandemic, which threatened to shut us down. Achieving over a quarter million dollars in sales solely and post-pandemic has allowed me to be humble and grateful for the challenges I have faced.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It has mostly been a 24-hour undertaking to own and run a small family business. A work-life balance is difficult when your work is your life, and I am still struggling with scaling the business to where I am not working on it 24/7.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Consider the emotional stability it will require to be an entrepreneur and prepare your mindset for the journey, just as important as you would prepare your business or financial plans.
  2. Talk to successful entrepreneurs in your field and note what they did wrong and what they did right in the beginning. Everyone's path is different, but it does not mean you can't pick up tips along the way.
  3. Know your end goal! Determine where you want the business to end and then set your shorter-term goals based on the end goal.
