Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ed Han, Co-Founder of Level Up, located in Los Altos, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Based on Dr. Jason Selk's method developed over 20+ years, Level Up is a first-of-a-kind masterclass of video content combined with a mobile training app to learn and implement the mental skills to improve executive function, goal setting, performance, and success. Dr. Selk started his career as the director of sports psychology with the St. Louis Cardinals, winning 2 World Series titles in the span of 6 years, and has since gone on to coach countless CEOs, pro athletes, entrepreneurs, Olympians, and other business executives. He also is a 5-time bestselling author and spends most of his time speaking to large organizations about high performance through mental training.
Tell us about yourself
I've personally been deeply interested in mental health, mental performance, and mental toughness as it relates to our day-to-day lives, business, athletics, and, most importantly, our closest relationships. So when I met Jason Selk and read his books, this method of training the mind to enable all of the great things we want out of life — success, health, happiness, and day-to-day excitement — really resonated. What motivates me daily is the unsolicited feedback we get about the difference the product is making in the lives of those using it.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having been an entrepreneur many times over, I am most proud to have been part of the founding team that built a $100mm a year revenue and profitable business, more importantly, the true family culture we were able to create that allowed the bootstrapped venture to experience hypergrowth through great execution.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Like anything from scratch, whether a start-up or a new child, uncertainty, worry, and the emotional battles in the early days are the hardest for me. Two inner voices constantly contradict each other in my head, and thus the appreciation for mental strength, positivity, focus, and prioritization that lead to confidence and, ultimately, execution to overcome difficult odds has been a tremendous learning over the years.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Stay focused on the top priority at any given moment to ensure you live to fight another day or get to the next level. In the early days, be both tactical and strategic — make time to think big but day to day execute the most important. Build a support network personally and professionally to stay mentally and emotionally clear and healthy to weather the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Mental training can help all 3 :)
