Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance training but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Diana Sullivan, Owner of Let's Dance, located in Chelmsford, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Let's Dance Studio, located in Chelmsford, Ontario. We teach a variety of dance styles, ballet, jazz, acro, tap, lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop, and musical theatre, to students ages three and up.
Tell us about yourself
I was born and raised here in the Sudbury area. I moved away for a few years to NYC to pursue an education in Dance and Acting. After graduation from my program in NYC, I did some work off broadway and some film and television. I later got a job on tour and performed all around the Eastern coast of the USA. I then decided to come back to Canada to be near my family, and it was when I started Let's Dance and started my new journey, which has led me here, 24 years later.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is seeing my students progress and gain self-confidence. I am grateful that I was able to stay in business during the COVID shutdowns. I am also so grateful to our community here for all their continued support and patronage.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I feel as a business owner, it really doesn't start and end when I go to the studio. Being the owner, you are constantly thinking about your work, what needs to be done, etc. But I have no complaints, I love what I do, and it does not feel like work when you love your job!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- It is important to research the area you are looking to start up a business in and make sure that there is a need for what you want to provide there.
- Have some kind of business knowledge, maybe a business course to help you with the accounting side of things.
- Make sure you hire competent, knowledgeable, and friendly staff to work in your place of business. Remember, your clients need to feel welcomed and know that they are important at all times.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Dance is a way to express yourself; it is an extracurricular activity that gets your heart pumping and helps keep you physically fit. Dance creates an atmosphere to make friendships that will last a lifetime. Dance gives children an opportunity to be a part of something, to create goals and dreams while having fun!
