Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leigha Butler, Founder of Leigha Butler Yoga, located in Kingston, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run Leigha Butler Yoga, a membership site that offers a new 60-min yoga flow every week. My core customers are women and men aged 35-70 who love a challenge that is as nurturing as it is adventurous. I reach Vinyasa yoga lovers who appreciate the physical side of yoga and who find that their way into spiritual awareness is through the portal of the body.

Tell us about yourself

I’m a mover by nature. If I go through a period where I forget to tend to my body, I can easily slip toward a depressive state. When I fell in love with yoga, I never let it go, and now it’s seen me through many seasons. I feel called to share a stress-free, playful & adventurous approach to the practice so that my students can taste the same freedom and bodily joy that springs when you give your being what it is asking for. I intend to do this for life, and I know that many of my members intend to age right along with me. I’m up for the journey!

My membership site came about in 2018, following some success on YouTube. I also ran two yoga studios for about a decade (sold during the pandemic so that I could move fully online). I have an online course that leads people to press the handstand. I am constantly grateful that I get to do and share what really lights me up in this life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Probably building my membership website from scratch. Prior to the pandemic, there weren’t as many pre-boxed platforms as there are today. My unique site is the culmination of many small decisions and a lot of grassroots elbow grease.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Left to my own devices, I would work on my business around the clock. The reality of my life, however, is that I’m a mom, a stepmom, a caregiver, and a partner. I feel spread thin much of the time and really have to develop laser focus for the precious few hours I get to work on my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If it lights your heart up in a deep and genuine way, then take the first step! Get it rolling. Every step you take will produce fruit.
  2. An extension of the above is to TAKE ACTION. You can read and dream all day, but business thrives when the owner is taking concrete and consistent actions. This is true in the beginning, and it’s true in the growth stages.
  3. Find a way to get yourself feedback — often. That could just mean testing an Instagram post, being detached from the outcome, and simply observing how the thing is received in order to best tailor your future engagements. That’s just one small example. Another is to survey your clients or audience. Listen in a genuinely caring way, respond accordingly, and you can’t go wrong!
