Experience the Difference - Legacy Therapeutics
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Olivier Pere, Owner of Legacy Therapeutics, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help people move better, feel better and perform better. Optimizing movements, minimizing the risk of injuries, and decreasing pain are what I help clients with. We all have tasks to perform, whether it's a gym, at the office, or on a construction site, and pain can limit our abilities to perform those tasks efficiently. That's why I offer all my clients treatment tailored to their lifestyle and their needs so that they perform at their optimal level.
Tell us about yourself
As a kid, I have always been passionate about professional athletes. I was more interested in the "behind the scene" of what makes a great athlete. I was curious about how they move, how they recover, what they eat, how they get better at their sports etc.
A year after graduating in development economics, my father had a car accident and became paralyzed. We tried everything, but nothing changed. I then decided to change my career and get into the health field. My first interest was physiotherapy, but spots were limited, and my degree in economics could not lead me to a master of science, so I decided to start with clinical massage therapy. Through the program, I started making a parallel with what I learned in economics and massage therapy, which is data collection, data analysis, and strategy development. So I was putting more science and critical thinking into my treatments. I started looking for jobs in the health and rehabilitation clinic after graduating, but I didn't get any offers, so I decided to rent a room at a gym and start my own. I had to quickly come up with a business plan, create a website, raise awareness, promote myself and still provide great treatment. It was hard, but I woke up every day thinking about my dad and why I did all this in the first place, and those thoughts gave me the courage and motivation to keep going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to be at a level where I have a voice that empowers others and educate them. To list just a few, things like seeing patients coming from out of town, driving hours to see me, or students coming to me for mentorship are, for me, a big accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
In my opinion, the hardest things that come with being a business owner are life-work balance and time management. Having a business is, to me, pretty much like having a child. It needs attention and care, which can take away from time spent with friends and family. There are also so many things that need to be done in a short period of time, especially when you run the business on your own.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You only have 24 hours in a day, and you can't control time. Focus on priority management rather than time management.
- You can't give to others when you don't have for yourself. You need to take care of yourself first; otherwise, you won't be able to help others.
- Baby steps count. Keep moving, keep trying, keep growing. The safest place in a hurricane is right in the middle of it, so there are opportunities even in the moment of uncertainty. You can't stay still; you have to keep moving.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
The last thing I would want to say is that it is a long journey and a never-ending learning experience, so you have to make it fun and enjoy it. Seek to become a person of value. Understand your niche better than anybody else. Don't compare yourself to your competitors. Do your market research & survey, put your customers at the center of your strategies, have a game plan, and connect and reach out to leaders and influencers in different industries to learn more. Keep looking forward; you never find the finish line looking behind you.
