Learn New Things, Together - LearnerYou

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Vivian Lei, Founder, and CEO of LearnerYou, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

LearnerYou is an online marketplace for knowledge entrepreneurs to earn income through 1:1 video calls.

Tell us about yourself

In 2016, as I was finishing my Ph.D. at Columbia, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I successfully fought the battle against cancer with the support of an amazing group of coaches, mentors, and friends. After that, I founded a startup - LearnerYou. The mission of LearnerYou is to use technology to bring the gift of personalized coaching and mentorship to more people. We believe that every person has the ability to navigate life's challenges and unlock their full potential through empowering coaching and community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We were able to recruit 200+ knowledge entrepreneurs to join our platform within two months.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are many challenges that come with being a business owner, but these challenges also represent opportunities. For example, as the founder, I had to learn a lot of new things on the go. When we first started, we didn't have a software architect or UI/UX designer, so I learned how to use Figma and Adobe XD to prototype our product. To constantly learn new things is not easy, but I think if you can find joy and excitement in constantly pushing yourself to grow, you and your business will strive in this process.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a problem that excites your passion and conviction to solve it. There will be many setbacks along the way, but your personal conviction is what makes you resilient.
  2. Learn to discover and nurture talents. This requires you to be observant enough to recognize the superpowers in others.
  3. Be inspired to become a role model for others by living the stories that you want to tell.
