Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with April McMurtrey, President of Learn Reading, located in Madera, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the developer of the Learn Reading program, which is a comprehensive reading curriculum designed for struggling, dyslexic, or emerging readers. I serve students of ALL ages worldwide who want to improve their reading skills.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a teacher and a reading specialist for over 30 years, with the last decade or so specializing in dyslexia. However, it wasn't until I saw what the ADULTS who were looking for reading help on YouTube had to choose from (which was terrifying) that I prompted them to create a program just for them. Learn Reading was designed to help students of ALL ages and levels - but particularly the adults who are desperate to learn but only have intelligence-insulting material to work with. These hard-working, amazing adults were, and continue to be, my inspiration.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Once my curriculum was developed, and parents started using it with much-reported success, I thought I was done. It wasn't until just recently that I began to fill up an online class - full of ADULTS - that my desires came full circle, and I couldn't be happier.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, I struggle with delegation. I want to personalize each interaction with every client, but I know that's not possible. I am learning to step away from the things that matter less, so I can concentrate on the things that matter most.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, I'd find a mentor for every step in business building. I would find the people who have done all the things that your business will require and draw their expertise. Second, I would set up lots of beta testing and trial groups. It's true that many minds are better than one. Your beta testers will give you priceless advice (and be your biggest fans moving forward.) Third, I'd set a weekly goal to reflect on what has been accomplished. Looking back in appreciation is just as important as looking forward in anticipation.
