Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leah Marone, Mental Wellness Consultant, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a corporate mental wellness consultant and provide a variety of supports to increase productivity, decrease burnout & turnover, and improve culture & connection within companies. My services range from facilitating training sessions to implementing a 5-step initiative to address topics such as boundary setting, managing stress & anxiety, and building resilience. My goal is to equip leaders and organizations with the tools necessary to make lasting change and consistently fuel a culture that prioritizes the wellness of its employees.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a psychotherapist for 15 years and have worked in a variety of settings. My consulting work began about five years ago when a leader I was working with individually asked me to facilitate a stress management session for his team. Things took off from there, and I have had the privilege of working with companies big and small on the east coast. I truly enjoy the balance of working intimately with individuals in therapy and then empowering and educating teams and organizations on skills that not only help them professionally but personally as well. Supporting others and creating the space necessary to take the steps necessary to prioritize their mental health and change keeps me motivated. Maintaining our mental health is key to connection, peace, and progress.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing articles for Newsweek and Psychology Today and creating a job for myself that encourages variety and time to honor other parts of who I am. I'm on a mission and am proud of my ability to take risks, welcome new opportunities, and keep my boundaries intact.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the most difficult thing is marketing. I am a clinician by trade, and entering the business world has been a steep learning curve when it comes to marketing and sales. I have gained traction but will always prefer the slow and steady art of relationship building.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Maintain your self-care & boundaries and refrain from operating with a sense of urgency.
  2. Identify your focus or specialty, but also lead with an open mind and open heart.
  3. Find a mentor or someone that will challenge you, provide feedback, and hold you accountable.
