Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Logan Cross, Owner of LCC, located in Calgary, AB, CA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
LCC is a General Contracting business. We build for both residential and commercial projects. This means our customers are homeowners and commercial builders. We specialize in the unique and hard to do. We get called in when things go wrong, and then we fix stuff. Our motto is "Build cool stuff. Make people happy." Our size and responsiveness make for a unique offering in our space because we can adapt quickly to any situation. We must be multi-talented and able to work with various tools and trade types.
Tell us about yourself
I am motivated by the creative aspect of what we do. Every day presents a unique challenge. We have to be ready for anything because you never know what problems will present themselves on any given day. I started my business because I enjoyed the satisfaction of building a superior product. We literally turn ideas into reality via our construction process and get to see the happiness in owners' faces when we turn things over. Small to large, every project has an owner that cares about what is churned out.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Surviving the period of COVID. For real. This was a tough time to be in our position because a lot of sites went into lockdown mode. Homeowners didn't want you in their houses. It was a strange time to do business throughout.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Motivating yourself to do something every day beyond the daily required tasks. This means planning for the long haul and not just doing what is in front of you. This is particularly hard for me as I am on the tools every day and then have to come home and do hours of work behind the keyboard.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find something you love doing because you're going to do a lot of it.
- Find people you enjoy working with; they make all the difference and really matter.
- Have at least some kind of a plan on paper, even if it's only a few sentences, about what you want to do and why. The rest will work itself out.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
The people you can find to work with you really do make a business possible. It is tough to go it alone, and you must learn to trust others to do what you ask of them.
