Health and Happiness - Laurie Levin

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laurie Levin, a Certified Health Coach, based in Charleston, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

So many Americans are struggling physically, emotionally, and financially. About 70% of Americans are overweight or obese. Over 90% of Americans struggle to pay their monthly bills, save, and go on vacations. I support my clients to create optimal health and well-being, reach and maintain a healthy weight, live a healthy lifestyle, and do work they love from where they want to work and live their lives. I coach people who are ready for the best next chapter in their lives.

Tell us about yourself

After 25 years in Corporate America, I knew I had to follow my heart for my next chapter in life. My mother passed away at the age of 39. I was 11 years old, so I learned very young that time is our most precious asset. How I spent mine became increasingly more important to me. When I was 39 and about to give birth to my daughter, I knew the best gift I could give her was my health. So I learned everything I could about the digestive tract (my mother had died of stomach cancer, and I was struggling with several digestive issues at the time) and what would heal my gut. Doctors told me I would most likely be on medications for life. Within very little time, I was off all medications and symptom-free. My work, today as a Coach focuses on three key areas of health: nutrition, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, emotional management: and stress/anxiety reduction. How we fuel our bodies nutritionally and emotionally dictates our longevity and quality of life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is supporting my clients over the past 20 years to transform their health and lives. Coaching has taught me so much about life, love, and happiness. I want everyone to experience freedom in their lives, time, and money. So I support, develop, and train coaches and clients to achieve their goals physically, mentally, and financially. Freedom, I think, is what we all want. Free to organize our lives around what matters most to us. Freedom from illness and disease. Free to be who we truly are. I love being part of that process, guiding and supporting others with lots and lots of TLC.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's the same thing that is one of the best things about being a business owner! It's all up to us. As a corporate employee on the rise, I had a team, a company name, and company resources supporting me. As a business owner, that all gets condensed into one--the business owner, and when you are starting, while very exciting, that can also be a bit nerve-racking. In times of doubt, lack, and fear, while not always spot-on, I focused on my reason for starting my business: to support others do what I did--reduce and eliminate medications, heal, and transform my life into one that provided great health, happiness, and the freedom I longed for.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get crystal clear on why you are starting your business and reflect back on this at least weekly. I check in with my why every day. It's how I start my day, as a matter of fact.
  2. Start your day with a routine: healthy breakfast, meditation, exercise. Stick to it. You gain your strength, stamina, and resilience (physical and emotional) from this time of day.
  3. Close out your day with a routine. Shut down all electronics within 60 minutes of going to bed. Self-reflect on your day: What went well? What and how could you have done better? Make a commitment to do that going forward, and appreciate the opportunity. I recommend the HeartMath technique called Heart-Lock In for 10 minutes in the AM and right before you go to bed. We want to bring the optimal state of coherence into our morning and sleep. Heart coherence is one of the best ways to optimize your performance and relationships in all areas of life.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Yes, follow your heart. It will take you where you want to go and when doubt, fear, and lack rise up, your heart will lead you forward. Also, my passion is three-fold. Healthy, Happy, and Equal. Three to thrive! Equality is lacking for too many of us in the USA. Bringing greater consciousness to my choices every day allows me to see where I have the privilege at the expense of others and where others have the privilege at my expense. I include action steps in my monthly goals that support what is so very important to me--equality for all. We all win as each of us gets healthier, happier, and equal. My book, Call Me A Woman: On Our Way to Equality and Peace, shares the way forward with 7 Habits of Equality we all can take on to make our families, communities, nation, and the world a kinder, healthier, and fairer place to be.
