Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in creative arts and design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Poole, Artist & Surface Pattern Designer of Lauren Lesley Studio, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an artist and surface pattern designer. I license my prints & patterns manufacturers, such as a fabric company. I also teach art courses and host an art channel on YouTube.
Tell us about yourself
With a background in both Fine Art and Textile Design, I began licensing my own prints in 2019 out of my Atlanta studio. I create original hand-painted motifs in my sketchbook that, through my creative process, transform into pattern designs for a modern lifestyle. My work is infused with bold colors and is often inspired by travel, fashion, and fresh trends. I focus on beautiful patterns and illustrations that provoke a fun, feminine edge and inspire happiness.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My career as a Senior Textile Designer in Home Décor began in 2012, and my in-house textile designs have sold to clients such as Target, Anthropologie, and more. My fabric designs are licensed with Paintbrush Studio Fabrics.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Creative work can be very subjective. In the licensing world, it's difficult not knowing if a collection you've worked hard on will be selected to be produced. So, you could spend many hours on artwork that may never be sold.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Go slowly. I always found it easier to work on my business as a side hustle while maintaining a full-time job. That way, I didn't have to worry about bills or making ends meet. Without the pressure of paying rent or a mortgage, you are able to experiment with your business and see what really works! Once it's generating enough revenue, you'll be able to quit your full-time job if you wish.
