Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Kess, Founder of L. Kess Coaching, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a habit, productivity, and mindset coach for entrepreneurs. I work primarily with men but do have some female clients as well. We dive into all aspects of life and business and use mindful habits to create opportunities for rapid transformation and growth systematically.

Tell us about yourself

I first got started after a successful career in medical sales. We taught physicians how to run cash-pay businesses in the competitive aesthetic industry. Seeing them grow from zero to highly successful was a lot of fun! After a large pharmaceutical company purchased our company, I quickly realized that the corporate environment was not a good fit for me, so I got to work building my own business. I was a skilled horsewoman and originally embarked on building an online business around horses, but through a serendipitous series of events, I found out the skills I used to retrain a horse with behavioral issues and teach owners how to work through fear and impatience, were incredibly valuable in teaching people how to break bad habits and build positive ones.

I ended up working with thousands of people to break every kind of habit you can imagine and reframe mindsets. Through this work, I fell in love with teaching and coaching. I see every person as a puzzle to unlock, so witnessing my clients as they have an epiphany that completely transforms their life and mindset is so rewarding and powerful! My work gives me energy; I love every minute of it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is client success. No matter where their starting point is, I get changes with clients, period. It takes a lot of confidence and experience to say that, and I can honestly say I have earned my stripes!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing for me is staying inspired. Running a business can be a bog energetically, physically, and emotionally. There is a constant roller coaster of things to deal with and handle as a business owner that can really kill inspiration. Continually taking action on something towards your business every day can be a real challenge when inspiration is low.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. For those just starting, the best advice I can give is just to start. Don’t wait for it to be perfect, for the perfect idea, time, etc. Chances are your business will evolve many times over, so best to get started and begin gaining experience. Being in the trenches will teach you what direction will work for you and help you develop your style, messaging, sales skills, tech skills, etc. I see so many people with great business ideas and all the tools they could possibly need to be successful, but they put so many obstacles in the way of actually taking action and starting.
  2. In order to run and grow a business, it’s important to get in the habit of taking action on your business every single day. There will be many days where it will feel like a serious chore, and your business will feel like a burden, but it’s in those moments where the daily habit of taking action will serve you well.
  3. Owning and running a business is one of the greatest transformational experiences the world has to offer as far as personal growth. You will be pushed and stretched in ways you could never imagine. It’s not for everyone, but if it calls you, it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. There are two main ways to grow
through reflection or pain. Both will be in plentiful supply as a business owner!
