Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Summers, a Certified Life Coach based in Rio Rancho, NM, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Master Life Coach and Certified Success Principles Trainer. I am also the Co-Author of the #1 International Bestselling book, Women Who Rise. Clients work with me one-on-one when they're stuck and are having trouble moving forward in their lives. My clients and I work together to create healthy boundaries, understand and live again through grief, divorce, or broken hearts. Build better relationships with their past, reinvent their futures, discover their worthiness, create healthy personal relationships, and let go of limiting beliefs.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the business of helping people in one way or another for most of my adult life. The last business I owned was a coffee shop and deli in a Colorado resort community, where I discovered some of my customers would come in to "chat" during slow times in my day. My husband was the one who suggested, in my next career, to consider becoming a certified life coach "because I was doing it already anyway."

After selling the restaurant, I found a training center specialized in certifying life coaches and began my journey. Once certified, getting started in business was the easy part (it was also the scary part). Knowing I was doing the right thing for my soul, I started with trust in the universe that my passion for helping others to live the lives they were meant to live would carry me to the right path. And the actions I implemented would help me to accomplish each goal I created. That passion for helping others was, and still is, very much alive inside my heart. It continues to keep me motivated every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My drivers for accomplishment as a life coach come through learning. I'm certified in seven modalities of coaching and certified as a Success Principles Trainer. To give back, I've served as a Mentor for international students in training to become certified life coaches. And I continue relationships with many of those students, now life coaches, as friendships and in a networking capacity today. The quest to continue my education so I can better serve my clients is what brings me success as a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing by far about being a business owner is marketing, particularly as a solo business owner. My expertise is in coaching, not marketing or social media.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, get yourself a good coach! Someone who can help you to focus on your vision and goals and help you to create the action steps to get you there.

Second, surround yourself with experts who can do the things you're not an expert in, like, in my case, marketing.

Third, keep going. Don't get discouraged by the obstacles. There will be obstacles. Know this and have the plan to work around them. With a strong desire, a "why" that drives you, and a passion for what you do, you will be successful.
