Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Lundquist, owner of Zoomers  Physiotherapy & Health Solutions, located in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We believe that everyone deserves to live their life to their full potential. We also recognize that as we age, this requires active management of our strength, balance, and mobility.

At Zoomers, we empower and motivate our clients to do just that! Our clients benefit from the expertise of our healthcare professionals in a one-on-one care experience to manage injuries and chronic health conditions.
They can also amplify their results by joining our Club Z Fitness Program to help them proactively manage their strength, balance, and mobility as they age. Our physiotherapists teach these classes to ensure members are able to exercise comfortably and confidently.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been interested in helping others, so a career in healthcare was a natural fit. Early in my career, I worked in elite athletics with a primary focus on getting athletes "back in the game." Although I loved that work, I found I was most passionate about ensuring my older adult clients were living without unnecessary restrictions. I was frustrated by the lack of resources in the community and wanted to create an environment that was welcoming, supportive, and empowering to ensure everyone could live to their full potential. Nothing gives me greater joy than hearing stories about how our clients are getting back to activities they thought they had to give up!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of our biggest accomplishments has been the establishment of our Club Z Fitness Program (club-z.ca). This online program can bring the eyes and ears of a physiotherapist into an older adult's home to help them access appropriate, safe, and effective group exercise. Our members have seen some amazing improvements in strength, balance, and mobility; most importantly, they are confidently moving through their lives with greater ease.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I like to be a hands-on leader in the business to not only support the business but also each individual employee and subcontractor working with us. Balancing the time required to do that and the time I love to spend with my two young children is the biggest challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with a team of people that can help you learn what you don't know!
  2. Be gentle with yourself - you will make mistakes... learn from them and move on!
  3. Take time to figure out what your/your business' core values are
they will help guide the tough decisions when they come.
