Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Lockwood, Founder of Laura Lockwood Therapy, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a clinical social worker, I offer integrative therapy for girls and women. Integrative refers to a body-mind approach that addresses emotions, thoughts, body sensations, and behaviours. Throughout my experience walking alongside women, I've come to recognize that women face additional barriers and expectations that hold us back and contribute to experiences such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. While I take an individualized approach, the foundation is strength-based and works to enhance the capacity of each person and their inherent strengths.

Tell us about yourself

I have a Master of Social Work and have worked in addiction recovery, supported women through relationship and intimate violence trauma, have worked with newcomers and with young people with trauma. In all the roles I've held, I've witnessed incredible resilience and strength in those I've walked alongside. This created a passion for starting my own business so that I can continue supporting people in living a life that feels good to them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been to see the hope and healing that my clients experience.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, I have to wear many hats. Some of which are not related to the one-on-one therapy I do with clients. Administrative tasks can pile up, and being able to manage time independently is an important skill.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on what you're passionate about. Your clients and business will reflect that passion, and it will be easier to put in the work when it comes from a place of inspiration.
  2. Find your niche. You don't have to be all for everyone or offer a service or product that everyone will be interested in.
  3. Reach out to people in the industry who have started their own businesses and ask questions. We thrive in a community.
