What's your business, and who are your customers?
My recipe website, A Beautiful Plate, is my full-time business. Sharing my passion for cooking and baking – and inspiring others in the kitchen – is my greatest passion.
Tell us about yourself
After college, I pursued my life-long passion for food and attended professional culinary school. I've worked in several areas of the food industry over the years (baker, line cook, marketing, and communications manager for a fine foods distributor). Along the way, I started my website, A Beautiful Plate, as a creative outlet for sharing recipes with family and friends. It has grown by leaps and bounds over the years and became my full-time job and business over five years ago. Food is my greatest passion, and I love being able to share it with readers from all over the world. It is humbling to play a small part in people's traditions and memories in the kitchen.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've had many exciting and important moments during my journey as a small business owner, but being able to adapt and grow year over year in this ever-changing business landscape is something that I'm extremely proud of.
I didn't start A Beautiful Plate with the intention of turning it into a profitable, full-time business, so I feel incredibly grateful to have the flexibility and be able to do this as my full-time career.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Learning to delegate and hire outside help as you continue to grow is so important as a small business owner. It can be a hard learning curve, but it allows you to focus on your strengths and will prevent burnout or overwhelm you, which can be common in solo entrepreneurs.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Passion and perseverance are key.
- Always be willing to adapt and learn new things.
- Seek friendship and continual support from fellow entrepreneurs in a similar space.
