Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Brining, Founder of Live Simply Healthy, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own a nutrition consulting business and a recipe blog. I create free and easy, plant-based recipes for my readers while also offering online nutrition consulting to my clients around the world.
Tell us about yourself
After struggling with gut health issues during university, Live Simply Healthy was started as a blog to share my easy plant-based recipes I was making with simple, whole-food ingredients. I found there was a lack of plant-based recipes that were made with actual real foods, so I started creating my own. That fueled my passion for nutrition and natural health, which led me to return to school to become a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and start my online nutrition practice.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was launching my nutrition practice. After blogging for many years prior, becoming a nutritionist and updating my business to offer a service was a huge accomplishment and really propelled the success of my business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things with being a business owner is having to do everything on your own. You will never have all the skills needed in every area of running a business. For myself, I have struggled with website updates and tweaks that were beyond my knowledge. I taught myself as much as I could through Youtube and websites and sometimes turned to experts for help.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My first tip would be to start before you feel ready. It can be tough starting when your product or service isn't perfect. You don't have to have everything figured out to start. You will start to earn experience and insight that will help you continue to evolve your business and improve your skills. My second tip would be to set small goals. As a business owner, you don't have anyone setting goals and ensuring your work gets done. Setting small goals and breaking up tasks helped me to get more done and feel accomplished with the little wins. Lastly, I would say following other entrepreneurs or people with skills you'd like to master, whether that be on YouTube or in real life. This will help inspire you and propel your success.
