Journey to Hope - LaToya Hayes

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with LaToya Hayes, Founder of Journey to Hope, LLC., located in Douglasville, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner and operator of Journey to Hope, LLC, a private mental health practice. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I specialize in anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, and work/life balance. My core clients consist of professional African American women.

Tell us about yourself

When I was younger, I would watch Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown's friend Lucy had a makeshift lemonade stand that read "Psychiatric Help 5¢" Charlie Brown would sit down and pour out his feelings. When I saw this, I said to myself, "whatever that is, I want to do that when I grow up." Little did I know that was my introduction to counseling and mental health. Even as a young child, I have always had a strong desire to help others. Becoming a therapist has just been a natural God-given and God-driven passion. Each day I am motivated by the lives I am able to impact.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been the shift in my mindset. My background is that of Corporate America; I was used to working for Fortune 500 companies and making their dreams come true. I am now focused on making my own dreams come true and leaving a legacy for my family. That employee-to-boss mindset shift was big for me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is that all responsibilities and decisions funnel through you. This can be a weighted role to carry; that's why it's vital to identify and implement the support you need. This may be in the form of a mentor, staff, or plugging into a community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips I would give anyone who is looking to start, run and grow a business today:

  1. Be patient with yourself; as you grow, develop, heal, etc., so will your business. Your business is an extension of yourself.
  2. Be the expert and the student....connect with a mentor and/or join a community within your industry; you are not in this alone.
  3. HAVE FUN !! Being your own boss can be challenging, but the rewards are great. Enjoy the ups and the downs because you can learn from both.
