Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Payne, Owner of Lasting Order, located in Newburgh, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a home organizing and productivity consulting business. We work with individuals and companies to clear the clutter to focus on what is most important to them. Our customers are busy moms trying to manage a household, small businesses who are growing and need systems, and seniors who are downsizing to move into retirement living.

Tell us about yourself

I was not born organized! After I got married, we moved 11 times in 12 years and had three children in 3.5 years, which created a high level of chaos. I turned to the internet to learn how to get organized. If I can know how to be organized, anyone can.

When I heard that you could make a career by helping other people get organized, I knew that was my purpose and calling.

Many people feel that life is out of control and they are reacting to circumstances around them. I'm passionate about helping people live proactive lives where they are in the driver's seat, choosing how to spend their time and what to do with their space. We all have things that we are not exceptionally skilled at, and most of our clients just need us to walk the journey to an organization with them, encouraging and teaching them along the way!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is growing my business with a team so that we can impact lives far beyond my personal reach.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is continually seeking out new clients. My passion is helping people, not selling my services.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not simply sell your time for money. It is exhausting, and you will not make enough money to thrive. Find other revenue streams, or replicate yourself with employees. Hire people to do the parts of the business that you do not enjoy.
  2. Set up systems of organization in your business from the beginning. This creates a level of professionalism and consistency that will serve your future business and team.
  3. Set boundaries around your time. You should be running your business, not allowing the business to run you. It's super easy to allow work to creep into your evenings, weekends, and free time. If you want to sustain a business long-term, create space in your life for rest and fun!
