Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rika Naruemitrvekin, owner of Lash Devil, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of Lash Devil, a boutique lash extension salon in Sandy Springs, Georgia (about 20 minutes from downtown Atlanta.) I am all about creating a bold yet natural look with lash extensions. I start with a consultation to study my client’s face and eye shape as well as the health of her natural lashes. I ask questions about her style and lifestyle to ensure I am not only designing a look that she loves but one that complements her beauty and is easily maintainable for her. My lash work is truly custom, and my clientele comes to me for that specialized experience.

Tell us about yourself

After ten years of practicing interior design, I decided to switch careers to something different. However, I wanted to still be able to express my creativity. I decided to go to cosmetology school, and while there, I met a teaching leader who was so talented in her lash work I wanted to be like her. I decided right then to take an introductory lash course. Fast forward a bit, I had finished school and worked as a hairstylist when a friend reminded me how excited I was after taking that lash class. It kind of hit me at that point that I should feel that excited every day. After ten years in business, I still feel that excited about what I do. I get to create art for someone and know that my art is seen by everyone who looks at her and that it makes her feel more beautiful too.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I am celebrating Lash Devil’s 10th anniversary this year! I have received various accolades and awards over the years, but nothing compares to the achievement of running a successful business for a decade.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling all aspects of my business is always hard. I am both the business owner and the artist. My day doesn’t end after my last client. I am essentially always working, whether scheduling my current clients, marketing to new clients, managing finances, learning new techniques, or actually applying a lash set. Finding time to relax and enjoy my success can be difficult, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Consistency! Practice, practice, practice until you know you can provide the best experience and best final product for your client every time.
  2. Find your own unique style. What sets you apart? What can you do differently than someone else? Find that thing — whatever it is — and own it!
  3. Continue your education. Never stop exploring new ideas for your business or techniques that will set you apart from the competition.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Not all lash artists are the same. We each have our own unique style and technique. Find the right artist for you — someone who cares about you as an individual and what you want out of your lashes.
