Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leigha Verbeem, founder of Lang Leven, located in London, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Kinesiologist and work primarily with women at all stages of life to help them move on with their health and wellness goals.

Tell us about yourself

There are a lot of pieces of my life that brought me to this moment - I was always encouraged by my parents to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. I started running in high school and had to attend physical therapy and easily took in the knowledge about my own body mechanics. I also saw a lot of my friends had very poor mindsets when it came to food and exercise. All of these combined generated interest in fitness and having a healthy relationship with both exercise and nutrition. From there, my interest in the actual science behind these things grew, and I kept taking more programs and courses to increase my knowledge! Now, what motivates me each day is seeing the wins of my clients, seeing them feeling better and moving better, and overall just taking care of themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest win is really the wins of my clients, as cliche as that may be!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is always stepping into uncomfortable situations to grow. But in previous jobs, I was always uncomfortable being in a comfortable position. So really, I think entrepreneurship is exactly what I need!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Save money or have another job to help supplement your income until you are established. Success doesn't (always) happen overnight, and the stress of finances isn't worth it. You're much better off putting your focus on growing your business because you love it and not because you're just trying to make ends meet.
  2. Don't be afraid to switch gears. Building a business is about trying different avenues, different types of clients, or different services. You're allowed to change your mind.
  3. Invest in a coach. Lots of us can learn from our own experiences to improve our business, but eventually, we need to hand off the growing part of the business to someone else. Trust their expertise and understand that, eventually, you'll need to start to outsource. Also, have systems in place!
