Cake Art and Design - Lambert Academy of Sugar Craft
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lesi Lambert, Founder of Lambert Academy of Sugar Craft, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Founded in 2007, Lambert Academy of Sugarcraft is a cake design business training center with our head office in Calgary, Alberta. We are engaging the power of entrepreneurship and nurturing it through our students. Come and experience the evolution of home-based cake design and bakery businesses by starting your next career change with us.
Our mission is to empower our students to pursue their passion, teach them the skills, and give them the confidence to reach their cake business dreams. We believe that the investment they make in themselves shapes their lives, giving them personal growth and community and ultimately making them better equipped to share themselves with the world.
Tell us about yourself
I was in the corporate world, working to build a future. But it felt like that future wasn't mine. I was an employee. I made good money, but I was not enjoying my life. I felt like my time belonged to someone else. I couldn't take a holiday unless it fit someone else's schedule. I had no control as to when I worked, how many hours I worked, and with whom I worked. I knew I had to make a change. I absolutely love what I do, and I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to create this business.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
That's an easy one. My biggest accomplishment is the success of our students. There is nothing more exciting and satisfying than to see where a student started and what they accomplish after they graduate.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As a new business owner, you have to do most things yourself. It can take its toll on you because you need to move in so many directions at the same time. We have grown a lot over the past few years, especially during COVID. Now we have a few employees to help, and I see more growth in the future.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Decide in advance what you want your business to look like. Take the time to write out a business plan, and evaluate your competition and yourself.
- Set up your business correctly. Get all the licenses and permits you require, so you be bold in your advertising and promotions.
- Get the skills you need, so you are 100% confident in your product or service.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Create as much value for your customer as you can, and charge what you are worth. Both you and your customer will be happier in the end.
