Let's Get Coffee or Get Right to Work - Lakecia Hammond

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lakecia Hammond, a freelance copywriter based in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a word tinkerer for brands who want to see their products or services reach the right people. As a copywriter and creative consultant, I take ideas and concepts and make them palatable and people-friendly whilst gently challenging the status quo.

Tell us about yourself

I first started my business in 2015 after having horrible bosses and people who operated the business selfishly. Ideas were stunted, and good work was overlooked.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Not quitting.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balancing rest.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be your own cheerleader. Being an entrepreneur gets lonely, and some people may not understand what you do. Do it proudly anyway.
  2. Find a good accountant. They'll help you allocate where your income goes and keep you honest about taxes.
  3. Find your differentiator. What sets you apart from others in your same field? Find a gap you care to fill and fill it.
  4. (bonus) Don't spread yourself thin. Do phenomenal work every single time—no half-assing. If you can't give your all, skip the gig or project.
