Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lakecia Hammond, a freelance copywriter based in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I’m a word tinkerer for brands who want to see their products or services reach the right people. As a copywriter and creative consultant, I take ideas and concepts and make them palatable and people-friendly whilst gently challenging the status quo.
Tell us about yourself
I first started my business in 2015 after having horrible bosses and people who operated the business selfishly. Ideas were stunted, and good work was overlooked.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Not quitting.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Balancing rest.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be your own cheerleader. Being an entrepreneur gets lonely, and some people may not understand what you do. Do it proudly anyway.
- Find a good accountant. They'll help you allocate where your income goes and keep you honest about taxes.
- Find your differentiator. What sets you apart from others in your same field? Find a gap you care to fill and fill it.
- (bonus) Don't spread yourself thin. Do phenomenal work every single time—no half-assing. If you can't give your all, skip the gig or project.
