Acupuncture for Body and Mind - Lacy Brandt Acupuncture

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lacy Brandt, founder of Lacy Brandt Acupuncture, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Registered Acupuncturist, and I treat out of a little boutique room in a character house as a stand-alone business. My clients are individuals who are in pain or states of imbalance in their minds or body. I love using acupuncture and a traditional Chinese medicine framework to treat anything from shoulder pain, anxiety, diarrhea, and headaches to infertility. My clients usually come in for one thing like neck pain and then get hooked by all the other ways we can improve their overall health.

Tell us about yourself

I found acupuncture after being disappointed by the limitations of our conventional medical system. I had worked for many years in hospital settings doing physical rehabilitation and often found myself getting in trouble for spending too much time with my patients, usually when I was sitting and listening to them cry after a traumatic injury that was changing their life. I knew there had to be more to caring for people, and when I got sick with Crohn's disease, I knew I had to look for other ways to treat pain and chronic health conditions not only for myself but for those I would work with in the future. I love treating clients in my private practice as I am able to spend as much time getting to know the ins and outs of their health patterns and work with them to find a treatment plan that works. It's motivating to see people connect the dots between their mental, emotional and physical health and the progress it creates.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hmm, I feel like I am such a new business owner that staying running and afloat without compromising with myself by working weekends is my biggest accomplishment! I feel like I have also grown a good reputation with lots of referrals and great reviews!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I am such a feeler, so the administrative, bookkeeping, and tax side of the business is for sure the hardest and most stressful part!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know how much you need to start with and figure out a way to automate things. Software is a business owner's best friend. Also, making friends and growing a good network of business owners to talk shop with is so important. You will be going through things your family and friends may not understand; it's good to access the right support.
