Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in videography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristina Vicario, Owner of KVography, located in Duxbury, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a videography business where I shoot, edit, and create content for different clients in the commercial, documentary, and lifestyle spaces. I architect narratives that exist beyond the final quote.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in sports journalism, and I went into college wanting to be a writer for Sports Illustrated. During my junior year, right before we had to decide if we wanted to go the "print route" or the "video route" in journalism, my friend said, "try something you don't already know." Because I knew how to write, I decided to take a videography class, and I never looked back. Telling stories visually became my absolute passion. I didn't just need words to tell a story. Expressions, body language, silent pauses, and actions spoke so loudly. Shooting and editing video teaches me something new each day. The people I have met and continue to meet have changed my life. That's what motivated me to start my own business and what keeps me waking up excited each morning.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is very small. I only just started up my business last March, but being able and lucky enough to support myself for nearly one year doing something I absolutely love every day is my accomplishment. Sometimes I think people who are tinkering with starting their own business need to hear that small accomplishments are the big ones. You can do it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a new business owner is the uncertainty of it all. Sometimes I think it would be so much easier to have a 9-5 job with annual raises and job security and paid time off, but then when you think about how much time we spend working, we mind as well do something we're passionate about. I think that's the key to leaving the world a little better off than we found it. Passion.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. START: Fear is normal, but it will be okay. Push through the fear and do what you're dreaming of. We only get one life.
  2. RUN: It helps to have a little padding in the beginning if that is possible for you. Having something like a part-time job on the side that can help keep you going as you start out and gain clientele can be super helpful and give you a little bit of security.
  3. GROW: Colette Peri, a popular stop-motion artist, taught me in her online course: tell at least one person per day what you do. You never know who that person knows, what connections they have, or what they do, and that will start the trickle effect of getting the word out there about your business and services.
