What's your business, and who are your customers?
Transformative Journeys puts on spiritual retreats for motorcyclists, leveraging the meditative power of motorcycling to enable riders to journey to the center of themselves. Our customers are typically accomplished riders who are seeking a deeper experience of life.
Tell us about yourself
I've been riding for more than forty years, including touring, competing, teaching, and organizing and leading tours for my friends. Following a motorcycle-mounted pilgrimage to Iona in 2019 that was personally transformative, I decided to help other riders have the same sort of experience by curating events that assist participants on their individual life paths. I love what I do and love to share it with others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Just getting started was huge. We can create so many obstacles for ourselves that it can be daunting. My best event so far was a five-day event in the UK in September that was made great by how the participants engaged, digging into the challenges and disappointments in our lives and collaborating on envisioning the next steps for each of us. It was an experience of authenticity that we don't often experience in life.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Holding myself accountable. Accountable for deliverables. Accountable for the next steps. Accountable for making it work. No one else is going to insist that it gets done.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Develop clear definitions of the following: your product/service, how you plan to deliver it, who your customer is, and how you'll engage that customer.
