Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion bags but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Fabiana Matuoka, Founder of Kubeeka, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a designer and leather artist. I make leather bags and accessories entirely by hand using the saddle stitch technique, similar to the way Hermès does their products. My customers are people who are looking for unique, colorful, quality handmade leather products.
Tell us about yourself
I am Brazilian-born, half Japanese. With a business degree and never feeling happy with my career choice, finally, one day, I decided to look for a career change. The new career search began while living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There I found Maison Aubèle, where I took the first steps in handbag design, pattern making, and material functionality. While doing raw material and equipment research, one day, I came across the website for Amblard Leather Atelier (ALA).
In 2017 while visiting San Francisco, I had the opportunity to take some classes with former Hermès artisan Beatrice Amblard. During my stay, I found my true passion, learning how to make handmade leather bags and accessories using the saddle stitch technique. In 2018 I completed the full program at ALA and started my first solo steps in designing and building my first products.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching a brand of high-end leather products in San Francisco right before the pandemic.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a one-person business, managing all aspects and producing.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Creativity, patience, and perseverance.
