Award-winning Janapese Style Nail Salon - K's Nails

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Keiko Matsui, owner of K's Nails Ltd., located in Richmond, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Nail salon specializes in various styles of nail art. Our clients include trend-conscious ladies with diverse ethnic backgrounds, brides wishing for the best nails for their once-in-a-lifetime occasions, someone flying in from another province to get nails done at our salon, and we have served several high-profile clients.

Tell us about yourself

After graduating from university (English Language major), my previous careers had nothing to do with the beauty industry. My passion for hand-crafting since childhood led me to this job. Going to a nail salon for most people used to be for "grooming purposes" only when I first started this business. Nowadays, we are in the world of "VISUAL" - showing their identities visually. Millions of nail artworks are now seen in SNS. I have competed in various international nail competitions - how have I been able to continue this business? Because I still have not achieved the best nails yet. This keeps motivating me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In the past 14 years, I have hired and trained many nail technicians. Many of them still continue working as nail techs, and they must be so confident with their skills thru working at Glam Nail Studio.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding the right staff, I mean someone with passion and dedication to their work!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Good interpersonal skills. Including among staff, for customers, etc.
  2. Weigh customer service (your faith in the business) more than marketing itself. Good customer relationship is the best marketing for small businesses.
  3. Listen to your employees - especially young staff - ask them how to make the most of SNS!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I started my current career when I was 37 as a nail student. Don't use your age to make excuses. You can start anything anytime!!!
