Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristina Watanabe, Founder and CEO of Wings of Fire Healing - The Phoenix, located in Racine, WI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Phoenix is a co-working wellness center in the heart of Downtown Racine, WI. I offer rental spaces for wellness practitioners to operate at an affordable rate.
Tell us about yourself
I began my journey in wellness in 2012. I worked at facilities and as mobile wellness until 2017, when I started Wings of Fire. When the pandemic hit, the place where I was renting closed. I knew I needed to build a space. The Phoenix rose from this point. I know that every day I come in, someone will receive education, healing, or just a space to relax. This is where I want to be every day! And the people who work out of here are amazing. I am grateful for all who have come through and those who have stayed. It is a dream come true.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I feel my biggest accomplishment is opening and then staying open during a pandemic. I have always had a strong drive, sometimes too strong for some. It has kept me going, along with the acceptance that I will need to pivot at times. My ability to adapt to situations as they arise has helped me navigate this part of our economic history.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It can be isolating at times. You are truly understood by fellow business owners. The trouble is, no one can get together to commiserate because we are all working very hard at our own businesses. I have learned to surround myself with supportive people and have increased my self-care. Know that you are not the only one facing challenges.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get your finances in order. There are a lot of hidden costs to owning a business.
- Do your research. A good idea is just that, a good idea. Will it survive in the market? If you can't defend your idea to a bank or investor, you have not done enough research.
- Be prepared to work hard for this dream. It will not be handed to you. It will not be easy or glamorous. If you are passionate enough to dream it, put that passion into making it happen, meaning you will have to sacrifice many things.
