Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristen Boutwell, Owner of All About Grace Candle Company, located in Columbus, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
All About Grace Candle Company is Toxin Free Child/Pet Safe. We make high-quality handmade soy candles that are long-lasting and can fill a room with their scent. Our customers range from ages 18-65 years, but really, they are great for any age!
Tell us about yourself
I started making candles because I love candlelight. If I could live by candlelight, I would! But I was tired of buying candles that would either burn really fast, stop smelling after an hour of burning, or they would smoke really badly. My motivation is my family. The business is named after my daughter and is part of our last name. Our scents are named after favorite movies, music, and memories.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment thus far is surviving COVID and the pandemic. I started right before everything shut down, so that was a huge obstacle for me. But being able to celebrate three years on November 3rd is something I am super proud of!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things I personally deal with is comparison. It’s an ever-changing industry, and with social media being as important as it is for an online business, being able to stay relevant and catch people’s attention to give your business a try is something that you never stop doing.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top 3 Tips I would give to someone are:
- Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.
- Passion! As long as you love what you do and you are passionate about it, you can’t fail.
- Discipline! You have to push yourself constantly and make sure that you are willing to work crazy hours and be able to get through the bad along with the good.
