Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krista Barth, Founder of My Online IEP Advocate, located in Hollywood, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide wrap-around support and resources to parents and professionals who advocate for children in the school system with disabilities.

Tell us about yourself

I taught for nine years prior, and I saw the need in meetings I attended firsthand. In one IEP meeting, I remember hearing an administrator promise a service that I knew we didn't have staff for. I wanted to be able to help on the other side of the table.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've successfully transformed over 5,000 IEPs (Individualized Educational Plans) for students with all kinds of needs (medical, learning, behavioral, etc.).

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Keeping up with all the demands of the business, from customer satisfaction to online marketing efforts. Also, delegating properly and training staff can be a challenge!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have some savings when you start out because, most of the time, it takes time.
  2. Work with an accountant who really understands small business needs and can advise you.
  3. Keep expenses low in the beginning and increase over time as the business earnings increase.
