Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Annina Klaesi, co-owner, and pastry chef of Klaesis European Bakery, located in Pembroke, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My two sisters, cousin, and I own a European Bakery. It is family-owned and family-run. We have a Swiss background and, therefore, always had a palate for fine foods. This has inspired many of our recipes and creations. We make anything from mousse cups and cakes to fresh deli sandwiches and soups to go. Many of our customers come from all over Canada to buy our European products. We also sell Deli meats and cheeses and a variety of polish and European specialty items. We have many regular customers that come on a regular basis and have been our loyal support. For anyone wanting a taste of Europe or just missing grandma's cooking, this is the place for you!

Tell us about yourself

My siblings and I are very close and have wanted to have a business together. We thought there was no reason for us to go our separate ways in the working world since we work so well together. We all have different skills and educational backgrounds, which help us work together like a well-oiled machine. Knowing where I am supposed to be in this season of my life and working alongside the ones I love motivates me to do what I do every day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of the biggest accomplishments as a business owner of 17 years is to have successfully grown this bakery with the help of some amazing workers and friends. It has been our goal to make a positive impact on our community and to bless our customers with good food and kindness.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the biggest challenges of being an owner is managing staff that has to work very closely together. Everyone has their good and bad days, and as a boss, you need to choose your battles. Having a good staff team and keeping them content is one of the biggest challenges I have as a business owner. Communication, love, and respect is the key to overcoming this challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make sure this is really what you want. If this is someone else's dream or desire for you, you will not be able to overcome the challenges that come your way. Make sure you have the right financial support, and you're doing what you love. If you do it for the wrong reasons, you will not find joy in your work. Money and success cannot bring true happiness. Make sure you do your research and have a proper hands-on experience! Intellectual education only goes so far. Make sure you have some practical experience in the field you are going into. Have fun!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I could have never come this far without my faith and the Love and support of my family, friends, and community!
