Fitness, Wellness, and Nutrition - KJB Fitness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kevin Bradley, Founder of KJB Fitness LTD., located in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an online personal trainer that specializes in results-based training for motivated individuals. Inclusivity is important to me, and I am proud to have many LGBT+ clients from across the world. Within today's fitness industry, I know it can be intimidating for some individuals that identify as anyone other than a straight cis male to approach a trainer or gym in the first steps of their fitness journey. I am pleased to be a friendly first point of contact to welcome you into the awesome world of fitness.

Tell us about yourself

I've had an interest in bodybuilding and fitness since high school. However, I didn't really get started in my own fitness journey until graduating from university in 2015. My interest in sports science and professional fitness training actually began during university when I was studying biochemistry. I began learning all I could about training, physiology, and nutrition both through my studies but also through independent research. I have a special interest in recovery and have attended events like the World Congress on Sleep, where I had the opportunity to hear from Olympic athlete sleep coaches (yes, that's a thing!). All of this culminated in me deciding to get my Certified Personal Trainer certificate in 2019 and start my business to help others with their fitness goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been seeing my longer-term clients (now with me for over two years!) not only achieve their goals but go on to pursue new dreams that they couldn't even have conceived of when they started.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In addition to running my business, I am also a full-time Clinical Research Associate, which sees me traveling around Canada 1-2x per week. As you can imagine, time management can get really tricky! I continue to play around with digital solutions to ensure that my clients are taken care of and continue to feel connected with me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep an open mind. For example, the pandemic kicked most of my clients out of the gym. This wasn't ideal, but I was able to reach new clients by offering free home workout solutions on social media to everyone stuck at home.
  2. Stay organized. Each customer/client has their own story and needs. Ensure that you can meet their individual needs by keeping your data organized and accessible. And take notes!
  3. Be kind. I always try to be mindful of the fact that people have decided to spend a portion of their hard-earned paycheque on my services, and I don't take this lightly. I always try to give my clients the benefit of the doubt and am quick to refund in case they are not satisfied. More often than not, this attitude actually has benefited my business rather than cost it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The fitness training industry can be a hard one to break into since there are so many individuals that want a piece of it. However, I think anyone that takes the time to learn the science behind training and nutrition (rather than simply relying on their own experience) can stand out with the results they produce.
