Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Kennett, founder of KiWell Nutrition Consulting, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
KiWell Nutrition Consulting is an insurance-based private nutrition practice specializing in nutrition counseling for people with fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome. Fatty liver disease is projected to become the number one reason for needing a liver transplant in the United States. Often patients know about their liver disease early, when it is reversible, but aren't given the guidance on how to make lifestyle changes to stop the progression to cirrhosis.
The KiWell goal is to fill this gap in patient care and provide the guidance and support needed to keep patients on track with diet and lifestyle changes. KiWell strives to make nutrition counseling affordable, and health insurance is accepted. The majority of clients only have a co-payment for each counseling session.
Tell us about yourself
Before starting KiWell Nutrition Consulting, I had worked at big hospital systems and provided nutrition counseling to patients that were waiting for a liver transplant. Seeing what these patients were struggling with and knowing that nutrition is the foundation to prevent their disease from progressing to that stage motivated me to open a private practice. Now I am able to help patients before they are stuck in the position of needing a transplant. It is easy to stay motivated as a dietitian when you see your patients come back looking happier and feeling healthier each time you see them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My accomplishments are only as great as my patients' achievements. Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than having a patient say "thank you" for guiding them in achieving their goal or having a client follow up a year later, and they are still healthier than they were before they met me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think the hardest thing is getting started. Things fall into place once you get started and the momentum is there. So don't be held up on making everything perfect if it is something that can be adjusted down the road.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a mentor to give you guidance and direction where you need it.
- Find a balance between not reinventing the wheel and being creative to find better ways to do something to be efficient with your time.
- Utilize your social networks to help you find clients and gain new ideas.
