Compassion and Resilience - Kind Mind

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lee Sowles, Founder of Kind Mind, located in Falmouth, ME, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We help schools and elementary teachers build emotionally resilient kids and kind classrooms with our easy-to-use toolkits and social-emotional learning curricula. Our primary customers are Pre-K through 5th-grade teachers and elementary schools and districts.

Tell us about yourself

I personally developed emotional resilience as a young adult after facing difficult mental health challenges. I used the practices, discussions, and tools that are part of my program to support my personal growth and saw my children modeling what I was doing. I knew right then that I needed to create a program that would work for busy teachers, so they could integrate these prevention strategies into their school day. I am inspired every day to change the world by supporting our teachers and future generations to feel connected, emotionally resilient, and compassionate.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a curriculum that has been supported and highly valued by teachers. Having developed materials that children are engaged with and enjoy working with. Impacting even just a handful of children in loving themselves a little more, feeling more compassionate towards their peers, and learning how to emotionally regulate on their own. Helping teachers feel supported in their important roles as educators.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning how to adapt to different economic climates to sustain revenue and pivot sales strategies to engage customer interest in a world where digital marketing can feel overwhelming.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in your mission and remind yourself of that mission every single day.
  2. Share your WHY with customers to engage with them on an emotional level and build trust.
  3. Pay attention to data as you build as a way to focus on what works well and let go of what does not support your growth.
