What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Kim Fonder. I am a visual artist as well as an art gallery owner and director.

Tell us about yourself

My formal training was in the field of education as well as applied behavioral studies. I started doing artwork and photography when my twins were little, and I was taking time off of work to be with them. Eventually, I was hired by an art gallery to work as a consultant, and my career took off from there. In November 2008, I opened a gallery called Exhibit, working with national abstract artists. Every day I am motivated because I love engaging with clients and artists about their spaces. I have great satisfaction in working with all types of clients to support their visual goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have had the distinct pleasure of selling my artwork to AD100 architects and designers, members of royal families, celebrities, and many wildly talented and passionate collectors. The gallery has conducted exhibitions with the work of the likes of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Owning more than one business is challenging in terms of time management. There is always something to do. I continually work on learning to delegate and receive support in both businesses. I am often humbled by the contribution of others that support me in these endeavors. I have a great staff of people who are passionate about the same things I am.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know what it is going to take when you begin. Be prepared.
Know your numbers. Get a business plan in place and adhere to it.
Receive help from others.
