What's your business, and who are your customers?
We restore the beauty that cancer steals in women battling all types of cancer. Our goal is to ensure that despite her cancer diagnosis, she can smile when she looks in the mirror. We serve any woman battling any cancer.
Tell us about yourself
I was a hairdresser for 30 years and a salon owner for 10 of those years. I loved the fact that I could transform someone in 90 minutes with a haircut and color. Now I have the opportunity to transform the lives of women battling cancer every day!!!
My motivation comes from watching the transformation that takes place. I feel as if cancer dims the light inside of a woman when she hears the words, "You have Cancer!" Through our work with Hello Gorgeous!, we have the opportunity to turn that light back on again!! My motivation comes from the smiles on the faces of the women that we serve!!! There is nothing quite like that!!!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My husband and business partner passed away in 2017. He was an amazing man that loved Hello Gorgeous! and the work that we do!!! I feel that my biggest accomplishment has been to keep the organization going despite his loss.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I have adopted the saying, "Get comfortable being uncomfortable." It's never going to be easy. So if you wait for it to be easy, you will be waiting a long time. One of the hardest things I have had to learn is to just go with the flow sometimes. I am a self-professed control freak. So going with the flow can be a challenge for me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Eat the elephant one bite at a time. You can't do it all at one time!! Just take it one bite at a time, one day at a time
- Give yourself grace. You don't know what you don't know!!! Owning a business is like being a student all of the time. Keep learning and keep growing!!
- Treat your employees the way you wish you would have been treated!! I always want my employees to say that I was the best boss and that this was the best place they ever worked.
