Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Miller, Owner of Kids Korner Inc., located in Watsonville, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are Kids Korner, and we specialize in educating one kid at a time with our play-based educational toys. We cater to toddlers and preschoolers and provide them with fine motor skill development toys, so their future equals success. The strength of the small intricate muscles of our hands is the basis for everything we do: writing, picking up a glass of water, throwing a ball, opening a door, feeding ourselves, etc. As a child develops, these muscles need to strengthen to allow them to live. Whether our Jumbo Counting & Sorting Bears to help with grip and release of the hands, our Jumbo Lacing Beads to help with hand-eye coordination, or our Bilingual Alphabet Blocks to help with language and gravity, Kids Korner toys help your child soar into their future with flying colors...because learning is meant to be fun!
Tell us about yourself
We are a women-owned business and started Kids Korner because we saw a need for electronic free learning. In 2016, we noticed that the rise of tablets and phones was taking over educating our youth. This was separating the mother from their child, and we wanted to do something about it. Hands-on, play-based learning not only helps each child learn and develop but also encourages interaction with loved ones. It is so important in a child's development to have the support and mentorship to grow up with a strong foundation of belonging to choose a positive path in life. Our future is what keeps up going and creating educational toys.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment at Kids Korner is seeing the happiness on the faces of our customer's kids. When a child correctly sorts the purple bear into the purple sorting cup, their expression is of the pure joy of understanding, and completing a task is priceless. Development is not only about completing a task; it is the love, praise, and connection to that child that fosters growth.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The most difficult thing that we have faced at Kids Korner is our ability to continue to grow our business. We have faced challenges with bringing our toys into stores which we know would help us reach more people. We know we have created an amazing line of educational toys and plan to keep growing in any way we can.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first tip we would give to anyone looking to start a business is to stay true to your vision. The second tip is to learn as much as you can about the platforms you plan to sell on. The third tip is to remain flexible and adapt to the ever-changing ways of the world.
