Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayla Guy-Hessen, Owner of KG Therapy, located in Fredericton, NB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a locally owned and operated Massage Therapy clinic located in Fredericton, NB. My customers are not limited to a certain demographic because, most of the time, massage is for everyBODY! This can range from people with high-stress jobs, athletes and sporting professionals, elderly patients, clients with medical conditions, clients with mental health conditions, pregnant women, students, as well as people who are focused on a healthy lifestyle and their overall well-being. These clients know the importance of massage as an alternative form of therapy and medicine.

Tell us about yourself

Well! I was working for a SPA as a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in town at the time the opportunity arose itself. When it was first presented to me, I turned it down multiple times without even giving it the time of day. I was happy working for my employer at the time, and the thought of such a drastic shift in my career after only 11 months since graduating as an RMT had me so overwhelmed that I didn't even want to think about it.

My dad, my best friend, and my biggest supporter, continuously pushed me to stay open-minded and give the opportunity some thought. My dad had experience being an entrepreneur in the past; he used this to help educate me and provide insight and positivity. My dad has always been someone I have admired because of how hard he works in life, no matter how big or small the job. I follow closely in his footsteps when it comes to my own work ethic, which is now why I know he pushed me so hard.

After a lot of long discussions, I decided to do it. I was sick to my stomach thinking about what that actually meant; I had no idea what to do, where to start, or how to do this on my own. I can now say I have proudly been operating KG Therapy for over two years now. My biggest motivation is my clients; they mean everything to me and my business. I have been blessed with the most wonderful clients. They never make my job feel like work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would have to be opening a second location as well as hiring my first employee. Hiring your first employee can be really scary. I had spent a lot of time building up a highly reputable reputation for myself and my business. I have to admit; I lucked out. My first employee, Sarah Manuel, an amazing RMT but an even more amazing employee and friend. She makes the space warmer, happier, and brighter. Our clients adore her, which is all I could have ever asked for.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is that it really is a full-time job. There is A LOT of time that has to be invested, which sometimes means sacrificing other important things in your life. For me, this looks like: not having the time to go to the gym as much as I would like, not seeing friends and family, less time to spend with my significant other, etc. My work-life balance struggles because it is difficult for me to find downtime and step away because I simply love what I do, but as much as this is a good thing, it can impact your life outside of work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never forget why you're doing this.
  2. It's ok to ask for help.
  3. Appreciate your customers and employees.
