What's your business, and who are your customers?

Located in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, NY, our music school offers one on one music lessons on Guitar, Piano, Ukulele, Voice, Violin, and Woodwind instruments both in the studio and at home.

Tell us about yourself

I have been teaching piano lessons since the age of 16. I grew up in a musical family, and both of my parents were musicians and taught music for a living. My mother was a principal music lecturer and taught at a teachers' college. My father was a pianist and had students coming for lessons seven days a week.

Teaching music lessons to me is so much more than just teaching students musical skills. It is about teaching them life skills that students can apply to their everyday life. Maybe it is how to approach something that feels difficult or finding an efficient way to practice. We strive to keep a balance between making progress and having fun.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

  • Preparing students for auditions and getting accepted into Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts via music performance
  • Serving 250 students

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner means that everything, good and bad, has to do with you. Making sure that all aspects of the business are running smoothly and wearing many different hats is not easy to juggle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure that the business is something that you're passionate about, something that gives you life versus sucking your energy constantly.
  2. Invest in your employees even though they may not stay with you for the long haul.
  3. Surround yourself with people who have strengths in the areas that you're not good at.
