Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Keyrsten McEwan, founder of Keyrsten McEwan - Nutrition + Wellness, located in Tsawwassen, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a nutrition consulting business - I work with clients 1:1, particularly around stress as part of my 8-week program, Busy to Balanced. This immersive program is designed to help women go from busy to balanced with nutrition support + the creation of simple, daily rituals and habits. It's all about finding solutions that fit into your lifestyle without creating stress and supporting the body and mind actually to become more resilient in the face of stress. The program is something I am really proud of because it combines the latest research on stress with my experience (both personally and with clients) to make changes that actually WORK!

My clients are busy, stressed, and overwhelmed women (mostly women) that want to make their health a priority but feel like they don't know where to start or how they will find the time.

I also work with companies doing education around nutrition for stress, productivity, and optimizing energy.

Tell us about yourself

I first got interested in nutrition in my early 20s following a health scare. I was told I might have cancer - I found I didn't (thank goodness) after going through a series of tests, but that experience really changed how I thought about my health. I started to question what I could do to make sure I was living my best, healthiest life. A lot of the answers to my curiosities really came back to nutrition. And so, I decided to go back to school (Canadian School of Natural Nutrition) and officially become a nutritionist so I could help others use nutrition to empower themselves in the same way. I am so passionate about sharing simple, daily nutrition strategies and habits that can really make a difference in how someone feels.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think it's been my ability to be resilient over the last couple of years with everything the pandemic has thrown the world's way. I've had to convert to a 100% online business, and it's been such a learning curve (sometimes tech is literally a foreign language for me), but it's shown me that I am capable of way more than I ever thought.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

So cliche, but finding time to do things other than work. I don't really like the term "work/life balance" because some days/weeks really aren't balanced. So I would say prioritizing myself can be fall to the wayside if I'm not really conscious. I find that with a really structured schedule, I find a little more freedom - I know it seems counterintuitive a bit, but it seems to work for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start anyways, even if you feel like you're not ready. I still feel unqualified to be an entrepreneur on a daily basis, but that's kind of the fun of it....constantly learning and growing!
  2. Take inspired but imperfect action. As a recovering perfectionist, I tend to want to make sure everything is "perfect" before putting it out into the world, but I think sometimes it's important to know when something is "good enough."
  3. Delegate and outsource the stuff you hate doing. Hint - if you hate bookkeeping, there are other people who LOVE doing this.
