Multi-Talented Writer and Editor - Kevin Gray

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in publication but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kevin Gray, Freelance Writer, and Editor, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a self-employed writer and editor working with local and national publications, including Bevvy, The Dallas Morning News, Forbes, InsideHook, Restaurant Hospitality, and Thrillist. I occasionally take on copywriting and content marketing assignments and have written copy for multiple Fortune 500 companies.

Tell us about yourself

My first job was in Public Relations, and I quickly realized that wasn't for me. But one takeaway from that job was that I enjoyed writing, so I set out to make writing my career. I started as a freelancer, eventually working on staff at publications and then returning to the freelance world. I enjoy working for myself, as it allows me to set my own schedule, pursue work I find interesting, and tell the stories I want to tell.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm proud that I have been able to attract and maintain steady clients over the years, which allows me to schedule my time and forecast my income. Without steady clients, freelancing often feels like throwing good ideas into the ether, waiting for replies that may never come.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business of one, I'm responsible for all admin. This includes tracking assignments, fielding inbound requests and pitches, filing expense reports, and sending invoices. It's not glamorous, but it's necessary to keep the business running.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pursue what you're passionate about. It's difficult to spend the required time and energy on a new business if you don't care about the work.
  2. That said, be reasonable and understand you may need to work up to what you really want. Certain jobs or ventures provide necessary stepping stones that eventually lead to where you want to go.
  3. Even if you don't like networking, be kind and generous, and help others along the way. Aside from that being the decent thing to do, you never know when those people may be in a position to return the favor.
