Look, Move, and Feel Like an Athlete - Kettlebell Athletes
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Bijan Matthews and Gabrielle Sage, Kettlebell Coaches at Kettlebell Athletes, located in Carlsbad, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Kettlebell Athletes is a global online health coaching business. We train our athletes through our app, where they have access to their daily kettlebell workouts, can message us with questions, and send in videos for form feedback. The best part is our athletes only need 2-3 kettlebells to start training which allows them to train from home and save time. Our community comes together from all around the world as busy parents, professionals, and former athletes. All of them have the common goal of feeling stronger and more confident in everyday life.
Tell us about yourself
As a physical therapist and nurse, we saw the limitations of the healthcare system firsthand. Our healthcare system is fantastic for life-saving interventions like removing a malignant tumor from your brain but falls short in the preventative medicine space. We wanted to get on the other side of the system and play a part in preventing the common issues clients would come in to see us for (sedentary lifestyle, obesity, high blood pressure). It is now common knowledge that MOVEMENT is the most important pillar for improving the quality of life in every single one of us. Knowing that we are able to change lives by inspiring others to move is all the motivation we need to wake up with purpose every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a business that aligns with our values and lifestyle. We had the opportunity to open up a brick-and-mortar gym but didn't want to spend the next two years of our lives living at the gym to get it up and running. Pivoting to an online model, we are now able to provide the same experience for our athletes with greater reach and location freedom.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Time management. The work will always be there. Make sure you take care of yourself while you take care of business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take messy action. You aren't going to know what you are doing at first, and that's normal. You will learn as you go.
- Invest in yourself and your business. Join masterminds and coaching containers to surround yourself with other people who inspire you and you look up to. The more value and skills you bring to the table, the better.
- Keep showing up. It will be a grind. There will be highs and lows. If you keep showing up, you can't fail.
