Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in research and development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kes Morton, President, and CEO of Pisces Research Project Management Inc., located in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Pisces Research Project Management (Pisces RPM) is a research and development project management company passionate about making the greatest positive impact on our ocean research money and time. We are committed to creating positive, true, and mutually beneficial collaborations to benefit our ocean community both within Canada and Internationally. The team has worked in multiple sectors, and we do our best work enabling projects at the intersection of two or more sectors. Pisces maintains honest, transparent, and fun relationships and brings these principles to our project management services to give ocean researchers and businesses back their time.

Tell us about yourself

I, Kes Morton, founded Pisces RPM in 2017 after managing more than $170 million CAD over 15 years of ocean research projects. There were too many projects operating inefficiently, often because the project did not necessitate a full-time project manager. As a result, people were devoting large amounts of time to something they didn’t like doing – project management. Pisces believes that people do their best work when on work they enjoy – and so Pisces was founded to enable people to do the things they love – and outsource their research project management needs to the experts at Pisces.

I am motivated each day to make our ocean community a better place, a more equitable and inclusive community, as well as to foster my team to do the amazing work that we offer to our clients and our community every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping enable a highly-skilled, empathetic, inclusive, and dedicated team to do great work for our ocean community. It has been a dream come true for me to empower my team to do amazing things within their ocean community, foster equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout their work, and craft a vision of our ocean future that we can strive towards with everything we do for our clients, and our ocean community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part about being a business owner is the responsibility I have to my team and my clients, who depend on me to show up and be my best self every day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It’s important to have no self-doubt when starting a business, as the first year especially can be difficult to see the long-term vision come together. Although revenue might not be what you anticipated in your first year of business, it’s important to stick to your idea and have confidence in your plan.
  2. Surround yourself with honest and caring people, as owning a business does not have to be lonely. Having people around you to provide you with feedback and direction on your business is invaluable to your business’ success.
  3. Having clear goals for why you started this business and what you hope to achieve within your business is extremely important to your business’ success.
