Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kemp Edmonds, managing director of The Canadian Workplace Culture Index, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We believe that exceptional organizational culture enriches the human experience. We use innovative technology, best practices, and research to assess, enable, and amplify exceptional organizational culture. We've developed a unique benchmark of workplace culture and use a modern conversational chat survey to collect feedback from employees rapidly. Those results create workplace culture scores and percentiles against the industry and national averages overall and across six different workplace attributes: workplace satisfaction, diversity and inclusion, employee connection, and more. Results are used to create an executive summary, qualitative employee feedback, survey results, and an actionable insights report, including a roadmap to improve.

Tell us about yourself

I have a passion for organizational culture, education, and building Canadian technology businesses. I've always wanted to help organizations to better understand and improve their workplace culture. Having worked in incredible cultures and toxic ones, the impact on my personal well-being was stark and motivates me to create positive work environments for all.

My motivation comes from the opportunity to improve workplace culture for organizations where those improvements will then scale up and impact workplace culture for current and future employees at an organization.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment for me is when a business successfully grows revenues and achieves profitability. This doesn't always occur with startups, but when it does, nothing is more impactful. A close accomplishment for me comes from working with individual employees who go on to find great future career success.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hard decisions around staffing, especially when you have to let someone go for no reason but the fact that financially it isn't viable to keep them on. This hurts the employee but also shows that a plan or strategy has not panned out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ideas are virtually worthless; execution and alignment are vital.
  2. Hire for your weaknesses and learn to delegate.
  3. Always be building your network and seeking advice from others.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurs should never be an island. You are not alone, and success will be extremely challenging to achieve if you operate alone.
