Satisfying, Healthy, & Delicious Recipes - Keeping the Peas
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alison Corey, Founder of Keeping the Peas, located in Falls Church, VA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I’m the recipe developer, cook, writer, and photographer behind Keeping the Peas, a plant-based recipe blog. I cater to families who live in mixed diet families and want to prepare healthy plant-based meals that their omnivore families will enjoy.
Tell us about yourself
I have always had a love for both food and nutrition. I grew up standing beside my mom in the kitchen, helping her prepare traditional Armenian recipes. At the age of fifteen, I became a vegetarian. I wanted to incorporate more natural fruits and vegetables into my diet to promote healthy eating habits. In my adulthood, I started to take an even stronger interest in food and how it nourishes our bodies. I began watching documentaries like Forks Over Knives, Food Inc, The Game Changers, and What the Health. These movies sparked a further investigation, and I began reading books about plant-based health, such as How Not To Die by Michael Gregor and Whole by T. Colin Campbell.
This spurred me to follow my heart and become a National Board Certified Health Coach through the Mayo Clinic. As I shifted my diet even more, the rest of my family didn't want to join me. That meant I had to get creative in the kitchen. As I experimented with plant-based and satisfying recipes for my family, I wanted to share those recipes with others to simplify dinner time for other families. That's when I started my blog, Keeping the Peas, to help mixed diet families find peace in the kitchen with satisfying, healthy, and delicious recipes.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was when my blog was generating enough revenue that I was able to leave my teaching position and focus on my blog full-time.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The most difficult part of being a business owner when you are your own boss is to stay focused and accountable. If you are a one-person team, you only have yourself to answer to, which is great, but it also means that you need to set clear goals, keep organized, and propel your business forward even on days when you'd rather do something else.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Create SMART Goals for your business from day one.
- Find a mentor in your business space. Their advice will be invaluable.
- Develop a daily routine to help keep yourself on track towards meeting your business goals.
