Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kaylie Klitzing, owner of Keeks Treats LLC., located in Boring, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a cafe, coffee shop, bakery, and breakfast spot, that also serves lunch and ships treats nationwide! My specialty is all the baked treats. But I put my heart into everything I make for my customers. My customers are anyone and everyone who loves delicious food! And a cute and comfy spot to hang out with loved ones. However, my customers are also those who don't want to leave their houses, and I can ship your treats right to your door!

Tell us about yourself

I started baking for myself. When I was an elite athlete, I would only have one cheat meal a week. So I would bake something delicious to enjoy and bring the leftovers to friends and coworkers. They were the ones that told me I should start selling my baked goods.

And I don't need motivation. I simply love what I do. Baking is a blast. And getting to share everything I make with others and see them enjoy it all keeps me going. If I hear someone say they would like a certain kind of cookie or other treats, I will do my very best to have it made for them by the next time they come into my bakery.

I'm in the process of making S'mores Cake Pops for a little girl who said that would be so yummy!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being where I am right now is a huge accomplishment! I own a bakery/cafe, a strength gym, and 50% of a coffee cart, and in the process of building a food truck and driving it to Vegas. I honestly never thought I would be where I am today. I thought it might have been a phase or gotten old. I hear from so many people that they begin to hate what they once loved because they turned it into a career. But that just hasn't happened. Each and every day, I wake up excited to do something to improve my businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me is taking time off. I am always working or thinking about work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Before you start a business, make sure you do your research. And be ready to work harder than you ever have in your life.
  2. If you are running a business, be patient. Learn as you go.
  3. If you are trying to grow your business. Be prepared to spend money before you make it.
