Capturing Life's Precious Moments - Keara Lloyd Photography
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Keara Lloyd, Founder of Keara Lloyd Photography, located in Albuquerque, NM, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a wedding and editorial photographer. My customers are humans who want effortless, genuine, and aesthetic images.
Tell us about yourself
I picked up my first camera when I was probably 8 or 9, and I never remember putting it down (lol). The thought of being able to make a living doing it never seemed like a reality till I got out of college and realized I didn't love doing anything as much as taking photos. What motivates me every day is the drive to be better than I was the day before. I never want my work to be stagnant; I want it to inspire others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've been really blessed to be published in a few art magazines, but I truly believe my biggest accomplishment is always on the horizon.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Bills and organizing (again, lol.) It's the much less glamorous side of being a photographer. I have at any time 40 memory cards that I have to keep track of and know how long they've been used for. Memory cards can go bad at any time, but an indicator is their age, so I am at all times making sure I don't have a memory card older than five years floating in rotation.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get used to being bad. That doesn't mean to strive to be better, but you're going to be bad for a while, whether that's the actual running the business element or your craft itself.
- Be genuine. Don't get caught up in the social media game of trying to project an idea of yourself. Be who you are, and be open about it, and you'll draw people who actually want to be around you.
- Mistakes happen; own them. Don't dwell on them and beat yourself up. Own, do what you have to do to make it right, and move on.
